Today, Congressman Mike Ezell voted in favor of H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act, a sweeping border security and immigration package that would address the ongoing crisis on our southern border. The bill passed the House hours before Title 42, a pandemic-era policy that allowed for swift deportations of illegal immigrants, is set to expire at 11:59 p.m. ET. Experts predict the expiration will lead to a massive surge in migrants in the coming days and weeks. "Title 42 is expiring and a massive surge in illegal immigration has already begun, but the president and his party are sitting on their hands," said Congressman Ezell. "Fortunately, House Republicans are willing to act to end this humanitarian nightmare." The Secure the Border Act contains provisions from three bills passed through different House committees in late April. Many of the border security provisions were taken from the Committee on Homeland Security's Border Reinforcement Act (H.R. 2794), which Congressman Ezell cosponsored. "When I visited the southern border earlier this year, I saw border patrol agents and other law enforcement officers trying to do the best they can—without any support from President Biden or Secretary Mayorkas," Congressman Ezell said. "That's totally unacceptable, and I'm proud to have helped craft legislation that gets them the support they need and deserve." H.R. 2 passed the House by a vote of 219 - 213 and now awaits action in the Senate. |
