Project Name - Funding Request for Phase 1 of Lamar County’s Fire Services Truck Replacement Plan
Requested Amount - $1,500,000
Intended Recipient - Lamar County Board of Supervisors
Recipient Address - 403 Main Street, Purvis, MS 39402
Request Explanation –
The purpose of this project is to begin implementation of a fire services truck replacement plan to ensure that firefighters have safe, reliable, and modern equipment to respond to emergencies. Phase 1 of the plan requests $1.5 million to fund the purchase of three new fire engine pumpers, while the Northeast Lamar Fire Department will contribute funding to purchase a fourth pumper. These vehicles are critical tools used to transport firefighters, pump and deliver water to fires, and carry lifesaving equipment used during emergency response.
Many fire departments rely on aging apparatus that can become increasingly costly to maintain and less reliable during emergency situations. Replacing outdated fire trucks with new pumpers ensures that first responders can safely and efficiently respond to structure fires, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, and natural disasters. Modern fire engines also include updated safety features, improved pumping capacity, and better equipment storage, allowing firefighters to operate more effectively and reduce risks to both responders and the public.
This project is a valuable use of taxpayer funds because reliable fire protection is a core public safety service that protects lives, homes, businesses, and community infrastructure. Investing in new fire apparatus helps reduce costly repairs associated with aging vehicles while improving response capability and readiness. In rural and growing communities, dependable fire equipment is essential to maintaining reasonable response times and effective firefighting operations.
By replacing outdated trucks through a phased plan, the project allows the department to modernize its fleet in a financially responsible way while leveraging local contributions. Ultimately, the investment strengthens emergency response capabilities, enhances firefighter safety, and ensures that residents and businesses continue to receive dependable fire protection for years to come.
