Ezell, Graves Applaud Bollinger Mississippi Shipyards’ $951 Million Contract Modification for U.S. Coast Guard’s Polar Security Cutter Program

Today, the U.S. Coast Guard announced their decision to award a $951 million contract modification to Bollinger Mississippi Shipyards for the continued development of the Polar Security Cutter (PSC) program. This critical investment strengthens America’s national security presence in the Arctic and reinforces Mississippi’s role as a leader in domestic shipbuilding excellence.

"Bollinger Mississippi Shipyards' contract to advance the Polar Security Cutter program is a major win for America’s maritime strength and Arctic presence," said Ezell, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation. "This historic investment ensures our Coast Guard has the tools needed to protect America’s sovereignty, our national security, and keep vital trade routes open. I’m thankful for President Trump’s leadership in beginning the much needed conversation to support efforts that bolster our domestic shipbuilding industry and enhance our nation's defense capabilities, in ways that we haven’t seen in nearly 50 years."

“As maritime activity increases in the Arctic, Russia and China are patrolling the region with new and capable icebreakers. American leadership in the Arctic requires a new fleet of Coast Guard cutters that can reliably represent and protect our national interests in the region. While the Coast Guard’s efforts to procure new ice breakers suffered years of delays and cost overruns under the previous contractor, I applaud Bollinger Mississippi and the Trump Administration for righting the ship and moving this program forward,” said Rep. Sam Graves (R-MO), the Chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Background:

This contract modification supports operations at Bollinger Mississippi Shipbuilding, with additional project contributions from facilities located in Massachusetts, Illinois, Virginia, Georgia, Louisiana, and other regions. Completion of the Polar Security Cutter is anticipated by May 2030.

The PSC marks the first heavy polar icebreaker to be built in the United States in nearly five decades. PSC will provide the United States with enhanced operational capability in polar regions, playing a critical role in safeguarding national security, domestic economic stability, and supporting vital maritime and commercial interests.

The Coast Guard’s operational polar icebreaking fleet currently includes one heavy icebreaker, the 399-foot Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star, commissioned in 1976, and one medium icebreaker, the 420-foot Coast Guard Cutter Healy, commissioned in 1999.

The service recently acquired a commercially available polar icebreaker to provide additional presence and mission capability in the Arctic.
