Congressman Mike Ezell today joined House Committee on Foreign Affairs Chairman Michael McCaul (TX-10), Ranking Member Gregory Meeks (NY-05), and a bipartisan coalition of members to introduce a resolution supporting Israel and condemning the war launched on Saturday by Iran-backed Hamas terrorists.
Since the first attacks on October 7, 2023, hundreds of civilians have died at the hands of Hamas, thousands have been injured, and hundreds more have been taken hostage. American citizens in Israel are among those who have been killed, injured, and abducted.
"The stories and footage we've heard and seen over the last few days are heartbreaking," said Congressman Ezell. "America must stand with Israel in the wake of these despicable attacks."
The resolution also calls for full enforcement of U.S. sanctions on Iran and other terrorist funders. According to the State Department, Iran spends hundreds of millions of dollars each year to support of Hamas and other Foreign Terrorist Organizations.
On September 11, 2023, the Biden Administration announced its plan to release $6 billion in frozen assets to the Iranian government. While the money is earmarked for humanitarian aid, national security experts have raised concerns that such a large influx of cash would allow Iran to redirect other funds to support its terrorist network.
"We know Iran is the number one state sponsor of groups like Hamas, we know Hamas has publicly thanked Iran for its support, and we know Iran has praised these attacks and called for 'Death to America'," Congressman Ezell said. "The United States should not be funding the groups attacking our allies and plotting our demise. The Biden Administration must immediately re-freeze the $6 billion it's giving to Iran."
