Congressman Mike Ezell (MS-04) released the following statement after voting to end the Democrat-led government shutdown: “After more than 40 days of unnecessary pain and uncertainty, Senate Democrats have finally agreed to reopen the government — something Republicans, President Trump, and millions of hardworking Americans have been demanding for weeks. I was happy to vote to reopen the government after the Democrats’ deranged shutdown that hurt Mississippi families, businesses, and federal workers lasted nearly 43 days. This shutdown came at a steep cost for Mississippi. Our state’s economy lost an estimated $82 million each week, nearly 26,000 federal workers went without pay, and more than 357,000 Mississippians — including 139,000 children — faced disruptions to SNAP benefits. Republicans passed a clean funding bill back in September to keep the government open and give time for responsible, bipartisan budget negotiations. Yet, Democrats chose politics over people — and nothing has changed because of their obstruction except the damage they caused. Now that this Democrat-led shutdown is finally over, it’s time to return to regular order, finish our appropriations bills, and restore stability for American families. That’s what House Republicans have been fighting for from the start.” |
