Last weekend, Iran launched a wave of more than 300 drones and missiles at our Israeli allies. Thankfully, Israel and others were able to shoot down the majority of these projectiles before they reached their targets.
This is just the latest instance of Iranian aggression in the Middle East, which has been spurred on by the Biden Administration's soft-on-Iran policies. How bad have those policies been?
In January of 2021, immediately after taking office, President Biden named Rob Malley as special U.S. envoy for Iran. Malley was previously the architect of the Obama Administration's Middle East policies, including the Iran nuclear deal — and he also turned out to be an Iranian spy.
That sounds like fiction, but it's the truth.
Journalists found emails showing Malley "helped to fund, support, and direct an Iranian intelligence operation designed to influence the United States and allied governments".
The investigation was handed over to the FBI and Malley was removed from his position, but not before doing unimaginable damage to our national security and to the stability of the Middle East.
Appointing Malley isn't the only failure this administration has made regarding Iran.
On September 11, 2023 — the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks — the Biden administration gave Iran $6 billion in previously frozen funds despite Iran's leaders refusing to commit to using those funds for humanitarian purposes.
In fact, according to testimony from Wally Adeyemo, the Biden-appointed Deputy Secretary of the Treasury (and former President of the Obama Foundation), the Biden Administration EXPECTS money it gives to Iran to be spent on "their violent activity" — but that hasn't stopped them from repeatedly trying to loosen sanctions on Iran or returning money to the Iranian regime.
The last six months have proved what the vast majority of Americans already knew: coddling terrorists and their funders doesn't make them less violent or aggressive; it encourages them to strike while our guard is down.
Thankfully, House Republicans are fighting to hold Iran accountable. That's why we passed legislation this week that would crack down on China's support of Iran through its purchase of Iranian oil, strengthen sanctions on Iran and its terrorist proxies, and strip away the tax-exempt status of any organization providing support to terrorists.
These shouldn't be radical ideas, but they're a major departure from what America's policies have been since Biden took office. I'll continue to fight for legislation that supports allies like Israel and treats nations like Iran as the adversaries they've proven they are.
