Congressman Mike Ezell released the following statement after the Senate voted to dismiss articles of impeachment against Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas without a trial:
“Today, Senate Democrats chose blind support of this administration’s failures over their constitutional duties.
After the House Homeland Security Committee spent nearly a year investigating Secretary Mayorkas’s refusal to enforce our laws, the Senate chose to dismiss articles of impeachment without even holding a trial.
I am grateful for the Senate Republicans who fought with us to oppose this unprecedented cowardice from Senate Democrats. We will not stop working to hold Secretary Mayorkas accountable.”
Background:
As a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, Congressman Mike Ezell participated in hearings both in Washington and at the southern border from early 2023 until January 2024 related to dereliction of duty by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
These hearings culminated in articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas for "Willful and Systematic Refusal to Comply With the Law" and "Breach of Public Trust".
Those articles were passed by the Homeland Security Committee on January 30, 2024, and by the full House on February 13, 2024. House impeachment managers delivered the articles to the Senate yesterday.
Today's 51-49 vote marks the first time in American history the Senate has dismissed articles of impeachment without holding a trial.
