Next week, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson will officially deliver the articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the United States Senate.
Here's a quick refresher on the process that got us here:
Beginning in early 2023, the House Committee on Homeland Security held a series of hearings on the border crisis and Secretary Mayorkas's dereliction of duty.
As a part of those hearings, I visited the Southern Border and spoke directly with Border Patrol and ICE agents who are no longer able to do their jobs because of Mayorkas's refusal to enforce our immigration laws.
On January 30, 2024, the Homeland Security Committee voted to send articles of impeachment to the House floor. Democrats attempted to stall and distract, but we held strong.
On February 13, 2024, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Secretary Mayorkas, the first impeachment of a sitting cabinet official.
Historically, cabinet officials have chosen to resign before being impeached. Secretary Mayorkas did not. He isn't doing his job, but he refuses to step down and let some one serious take his place.
Next week, the House will be delivering the articles of impeachment to the Senate. While I expect Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will dismiss or sidetrack the impeachment, I hope he takes this seriously instead. The American people deserve accountable government, and they deserve an impeachment trial.
For more on this process, I encourage you to read this article by my friend and our chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, Congressman Mark Green (TN-07).
The House — and especially the members of the House Committee on Homeland Security — did our job. Now its time for the Senate to do theirs.
