Representative Mike Ezell

Dear [salutation],

It's been another great week fighting for our South Mississippi values and standing up to foreign adversaries and the radical left. Here's what's going on in Washington:

What Does Biden Remember?

This week, the House and the American people were finally able to hear testimony from Special Counsel Robert Hur (who was assigned to investigate Biden's mishandling of classified documents) and read the transcript of his interview with President Biden.

House Republicans fought to have that transcript released because we believe it's important for the American people to know if our president is up to his job.

The transcript is seriously concerning. President Biden failed to remember basic information. Here are a few of the questions he asked his advisors during the interview:

"In 2009, am I still vice president?"

– President Joe Biden in October 2023

"If it was 2013 — when did I stop being vice president?"

– President Joe Biden in October 2023

"Trump gets elected in November of 2017?"

– President Joe Biden in October 2023

We expect high school history students to remember when presidential terms start and end, and it's not unrealistic to expect the same from the man who is supposed to be leader of the free world.

These failures to remember basic information are the reason why Special Counsel Hur declined to bring charges against Biden.

In his report last month, he explained that decision, writing in part, "at trial, Mr. Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."

What Did the Special Counsel Find?

In both his report and his testimony, Special Counsel Hur made it abundantly clear that his investigation did not exonerate Joe Biden. So what did it actually find?

President Biden knew he couldn't keep classified information at his home, but he chose to anyway.

He kept national security information in unlocked drawers throughout his house and tattered boxes in his garage. On multiple occasions, he read from those documents nearly verbatim to his ghostwriter who had no security clearance.

After Mr. Hur was named Special Counsel in this case, (and years after the book he wrote for President Biden was published) the ghostwriter attempted to delete audio recordings of conversations where President Biden willfully broke laws by sharing classified information — information he should never have had available in the first place.

And even as recently as last month, President Biden continued to lie when asked about sharing classified information with his ghostwriter.

"I did not share classified information. I did not share it. I guarantee I did not."

– President Biden on February 8, 2024

The coverup didn't stop there. Special Counsel Hur testified that the White House attempted to edit and change his report before it was released because they knew how damaging the truth is.

Now, they're working to smear Robert Hur — who Biden's Attorney General hand-picked to handle this case — as a politically motivated prosecutor trying to create bad headlines for Joe Biden.

The American people don't buy it.

The reality is that in the last decade, three leading presidential candidates (two Democrats and one Republican) have been alleged to mishandle classified documents.

The Obama and Biden administrations let Hillary Clinton and now Joe Biden off the hook in spite of mountains of evidence. But former President Donald Trump hasn't received the same treatment.

Treating one candidate differently than others because of his party is a politically motivated prosecution. Telling the truth about a president who can't even remember when he served as vice president is not.

Standing Up to China

On Wednesday, the House voted to protect Americans’ data and our national security from Chinese spyware.

The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act is a nonpartisan bill that prevents apps owned and operated by foreign enemies like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea from operating in the United States.

This legislation is relevant because of TikTok, a social media app controlled by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). If the bill is signed into law, TikTok's Chinese owners will be forced to sell the app to a company that's not controlled by a foreign adversary.

China wouldn't just lose access to the data the app is collecting from American citizens (a serious national security threat by itself), but also it's ability to control the app's algorithm, which it uses to manipulate millions of people around the globe. That's why the CCP has launched a misinformation campaign designed to sink this legislation.

Prompted by in-app notifications, hundreds of people — most of them teenagers and preteens — called my office this week to ask Congress to block the bill. In a particularly disturbing display of the app's influence on young people, several callers threatened to kill themselves, me, and my family if I voted to "ban TikTok".

We can't allow a foreign adversary to maintain that much sway over our kids. It's a national security issue, and that's why we wrote a nonpartisan bill that addresses the issues with TikTok without banning the app or infringing on the First Amendment.

I was proud to support that bill in the House, and I hope to see the Senate consider and pass it soon so we can make our nation safer from adversaries around the globe.

The Height of Hypocrisy

I don't spend much time watching Senate floor speeches, but I caught one yesterday that I found particularly disgusting.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer used his platform to call for new elections in Israel and the ouster of prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Whether you agree or disagree with Netanyahu's politics, Senator Schumer shouldn't be undermining Israel's democratically-elected leadership, especially while the country is still reeling from Hamas terror attacks.

It's even worse because Schumer and other Democrats spent years spreading conspiracy theories about foreign interference in our elections.

The pursuit of "Russian collusion" and the Mueller Report were all they could talk about (at least until the report came back and failed to provide real proof of any ties between the Trump campaign and Russia) — but now those same Democrats think it's okay to interfere with another nation's elections?

That's the height of hypocrisy, and it deserves to be condemned.

I'll be in Washington again next week as I continue to work for our district and its people.

If I can help you with a federal agency or if you have questions about what's going on in Washington, please contact my team via my website or at one of the offices below.

It's my honor to serve you and all of South Mississippi in the United States Congress.

Sincerely,

Mike Ezell
