Representative Mike Ezell

Dear [salutation],

After seven straight weeks in Washington, it’s been great to be back home in South Mississippi. Here’s what my team and I have done:

Showing Up for South Mississippi

Since I arrived back home, I've travelled all over the district, from Moss Point to Poplarville and Biloxi to Hattiesburg.

Showing up for South Mississippi is my number one priority as your Congressman, and I'm committed to helping our communities tackle the problems we face.

On Wednesday, I joined the Biloxi Lions Club to talk about how my staff and I have been working to strengthen and protect our Gulf Coast economy.

One of my proudest accomplishments so far was getting the Army Corps of Engineers to commit to including Mississippi Gulf Coast leaders, elected officials, and business owners in ongoing talks about the Bonnet Carré Spillway.

Opening the Spillway four years ago cost many Mississippians their livelihoods. I'm doing everything in my power to ensure that doesn't happen again.

Last week, I sent out the video of my conversation with Assistant Secretary of the Army Michael Connor about the Bonnet Carré. If you missed it, you can watch it here:

Congressional Art Competition Winner

On Monday, I congratulated our 2023 Congressional Art Competition winner for the Fourth Congressional District, Alayna Horan from Oak Grove High School. Alayna and her art teacher, Mrs. Tonya Rivers, visited my Hattiesburg office, where I presented them with certificates and letters of commendation.

As a winner, Alayna joins a long tradition of student artists from across the country who have participated in and won a Congressional Art Competition. Alayna's artwork of Golden Age actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr will hang in the Capitol building for the next year.

Alayna is a great reminder of the many talented young men and women who call South Mississippi home. Along with state and local elected officials, I'm working to make sure these young adults have opportunities that will encourage them to stay and build their lives here in our great state.

Historic Supreme Court Wins

A year after the Dobbs decision, the Supreme Court has again delivered three historic rulings that protect our Constitutional rights.

Yesterday, the Court overturned racial discrimination in the college admission process at Harvard and other schools across the country. This is a massive victory for our nation's founding principles, especially the belief that all men are created equal.

College applicants—and every American—should by judged by their merit and character, not the color of their skin.

Today, the Court released two additional rulings with massive implications. First, they defended religious freedom in 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis, ruling that the State of Colorado could not force a Christian web designer to create websites that violate her conscience.

Then, the Court ruled President Biden's student loan transfer scheme unconstitutional in Biden v. Nebraska. That decision upheld what everyone (including Biden) knew. Here's what he and Nancy Pelosi had to say about the scheme just two years ago:

"I don't think I have the authority to do it."

- Joe Biden (February 2021)

"People think that the president of the United States has the power for debt forgiveness. He does not.... That has to be an act of Congress."

- Nancy Pelosi (July 2021)

President Biden knew this scheme was unconstitutional, but he did it anyway because he wanted to score political points.

I was proud to join my House and Senate Republican colleagues on a bill that would have overturned this scheme—one that the president chose to veto to appease his radical base—and I'm grateful to the Supreme Court for continuing to defend our Constitution.

Next week, I'll continue meeting with people across the district and talking about how my team and I can best serve the people of South Mississippi. If you have questions or need help with a federal agency, you can call one of my offices below or contact us on our website at ezell.house.gov.

Sincerely,

Mike Ezell
