Representative Mike Ezell

Dear [salutation],

It's been another great week working for the people of South Mississippi. I started the week in the district before traveling down to the border with my Republican colleagues from the House Committee on Homeland Security.

Here are some of the highlights from the last week:

Supporting Southern Miss

Both myself and my staff have had opportunities to see some of the amazing things going on at Southern Miss this week.

On Tuesday, I met with Dr. Joe Paul and other university administrators in Hattiesburg. I had the privilege of attending Dr. Paul's introductory press conference last fall, and I've been impressed by his leadership as President of the University.

My staff met with other university leaders to talk about how Southern Miss is pursuing groundbreaking research and development both in Hattiesburg and on the Gulf Coast, including at the new Marine Research Center at the Port of Gulfport.

As a Golden Eagle myself, I'm proud of the incredible work our university is doing. I'm honored to be able to represent Southern Miss and its students, faculty, and staff and to serve as a partner for the university in Congress.

Working With Community Leaders

I spent Wednesday in Stone, Forrest, and Pearl River Counties. I sat down with local leaders to talk about economic development, law enforcement, and other issues that matter to our communities.

I also took a trip to the Poplarville Post Office, which collapsed last January. Mayor Louise Smith showed me the damage, and we talked about the difficulties the city has had with the US Postal Service.

My team and I have been working with Senator Wicker and Senator Hyde-Smith to address the problem because the people of Poplarville deserve answers and action from the USPS.

The federal government can't be allowed to avoid accountability and ignore problems just because they happen in small towns and rural communities.

Visiting Our Southern Border

On Thursday, I flew to El Paso to join my Republican colleagues from the House Committee on Homeland Security in a border visit.

Before the rest of the committee members arrived, Congressman Michael Guest and I had the opportunity to meet with men and women of the Mississippi National Guard who are stationed in West Texas.

I'm incredibly grateful for these Mississippians and the work they're doing to keep our nation safe.

As a Sheriff, I clearly saw the impact of the border crisis on South Mississippi. Fentanyl and other illegal drugs flow across the border and young men and women are dying tragic deaths.

I made the trip to El Paso because I wanted to see more of the problems firsthand. I'm hopeful that what we see and discuss will help bring real, permanent solutions to support our border patrol and secure the southern border once and for all.

I'll be sharing more details about my border trip in next week's newsletter. If you have friends or family who aren't subscribed up yet, please encourage them to sign up at ezell.house.gov. They can also connect with my office on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to get more frequent updates.

I'm proud to serve you and all of South Mississippi in Congress.

Sincerely,

Mike Ezell
