Representative Mike Ezell

Dear [salutation],

I had a great few days back home in South Mississippi before returning to Washington to fight back against wasteful spending. Here's what's been going on:

Protecting Our Gulf

On Tuesday, the Army Corps of Engineers held a public meeting in Bay St. Louis to talk about the Lower Mississippi River Comprehensive Study.

That's the same study I questioned Assistant Secretary of the Army Michael Connor about last June. In our conversation in a hearing held by the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure's Water Resources and Environment subcommittee, Mr. Connor committed to me that the Army Corps would include Mississippi's Gulf Coast community in the study.

The Army Corps leadership that was present Tuesday didn't reassure me that they would keep that commitment. They seemed more interested in gathering survey responses than in actually having a conversation about the Bonnet Carré and its effect on the Mississippi Sound.

I took the opportunity to voice the complaints and concerns I've heard from people across the district:

The opening of the Bonnet Carré Spillway in 2019 devastated our coast and wiped out both the wild oyster population and the small and family-owned businesses that depended on that population.

That's why elected leaders and business people from across the coast are working together to educate and advocate for a flood-control plan that considers not just those communities along the Mississippi river, but also those on the Gulf Coast.

I'm going to do everything in my power to ensure that the Army Corps keeps their commitment and hears our voice at every step of this process.

No More Excuses

I flew back to Washington this week to vote against yet another continuing resolution.

The way our appropriations process is intended to work, the House and Senate pass 12 appropriations bills to fund the government for one year. These bills are supposed to be passed and signed into law before the previous year's bills expire on September 30th.

Instead of passing those bills this year, though, Washington kicked the can down the road. Congress has repeatedly passed continuing resolutions (or CRs) over my objections. These bills have extended Pelosi-Schumer spending levels for nearly half a year.

Here's my statement on yesterday's CR vote:

Congressman Ezell's Quote on the Continuing Resolution Vote (02.29.24)

When I was a boy, my dad taught me a couple of lessons our country would do well to learn: You can't always get what you want, and you can't spend what you don't have.

House Republicans must get back to work funding the government as our founding fathers intended by passing conservative, single-subject appropriations bills. We can't keep spending trillions we don't have.

I voted against the CR yesterday to hold Washington accountable, and I'll continue fighting against wasteful spending because there are no more excuses.

The Truth About Our Southern Border

You probably saw where President Biden and former President Trump both took trips to our Southern Border this week. The towns they chose to visit and the sections of the border they saw tell two very different stories.

President Biden visited Brownsville, Texas, a city on the southernmost point of Texas's Gulf Coast. Brownsville is one of the least busy—and most sanitized—locations on our southern border. Over the last five days, Brownsville has seen just 46 migrant crossings in the past five days.

If that's all you saw, you could be forgiven for thinking the border was mostly under control.

But the reality is that President Biden's photo-op visit didn't show what's actually going on at our Southern Border.

Just over 300 miles away in Eagle Pass, Texas, President Trump visited a community that's seen over 2,100 crossings in that same five day period.

This Administration could have focused on securing the border and enforcing the law. Instead, they're focused on gaslighting and re-branding a massive illegal immigration problem—referring to illegal immigrants as "newcomers".

But changing the words they use doesn't change the truth.

The people coming across our wide-open Southern Border are still breaking the law—even if Homeland Secretary Mayorkas and his bureaucrats refuse to enforce it.

The American people are tired of lies and misdirection about this crisis. There are two things that could fix this problem almost immediately, and both require action from the U.S. Senate: they can impeach Secretary Mayorkas for his dereliction of duty, and they can pass H.R. 2 to reinstate real border security measures.

I'll be back in Washington next week to continue fighting for our South Mississippi values and standing up to swamp politics. As always, if you have questions about pending legislation or need help with a federal agency, please contact my team via my website or at one of the offices below.

It's an honor and a privilege to serve as your United States Congressman.

Sincerely,

Mike Ezell
